Linda Jeffers has been a long time collector of all things cast aside. She has historically been well adept at allowing these items to come together and generate new narratives and generate meaning; breathing a new life from the ashes of their previous lives. In this latest body of works she pulls from the idea of the cyclical nature of birth, death, and rebirth to create new meanings in what some would otherwise view as trivial surfaces.
“Infused with their own energetic history, objects have metamorphosed from the cast-off and mundane to the treasured, and the raw material for the assemblages has become precious antique relics from my own family’s past, my now extensive collection garnered from a flea market on the outskirts of Paris and other sources.” She states, “It is no surprise that at the same time the themes expressed in these later works have become increasingly more personal and intimate. These works are more than clever assemblages or reflections on chaos and order. They are psychodramas. The display and manipulation of materials help bridge the worlds of internal and external experience for me as artist and give form to deeply buried feelings, thoughts, and memories.”
As Jeffers’ studio practice moves more into the 2d surface, she has chosen to honor her process of assemblage and three-dimensional work with this last exhibition of the “object” as her chosen medium, which lead her to the exhibition title. She has been an Artist Member of Baton Rouge Gallery since 1993, and earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts & her Masters of Fine Arts from Louisiana State University.
This exhibition is presented alongside the latest works from Mary Ann Caffery, Theresa Herrera, & Brian Kelly. All works from these four artists are on view, free of charge, during normal gallery hours (12 - 6 p.m., Tue - Sun) through August 1, 2019.
