Dawn black: Dearest Disaffection

In Dawn Black’s latest body of work, Dearest Disaffection, representational imagery visualizes narratives to inspire social dialogue and critique. Using a variety of collected source material, tentative systems of power and identity are examined through watercolor on paper to create sociological narratives.  Social norms and trends, iconography, memes, gender roles and expectations are a few of many perceptions this body of work is built upon. In addition to the paintings, Dearest Disaffection includes installations of such found objects as baby doll eyes and lace doilies (the latter reworked into something akin to a kidnapper’s note) to address the current fragility of our time and to provoke critical thought about our place in the world.

Black has been an Artist Member of Baton Rouge Gallery since 2010. She earned her Master of Fine Arts from the University of Iowa, and her Bachelor of Fine Arts from Louisiana State University.

This exhibition is presented alongside the latest works from Danielle Burns, Leslie Friedman, and Kathryn Hunter. All works from these four artists are on view, free of charge during normal gallery hours (12 - 6 p.m., Tue - Sun), through September 27, 2019.
