Theresa Herrera is a multimedia artist who oftentimes focuses on socially conscious subject matter. Her art is informed by her Mexican ancestry, sacred geometry, cosmograms, mandalas, labyrinths and Mayan hieroglyphs. She creates form by using transparent and overlapping waves of colors and materials in works that range from geometric abstraction to surrealism.

This body of work revisits imagery that she had previously drifted away from in her studio, but has recently been drawn back to, due to its powerful iconic meaning. “The focal point of my new work is inspired by a beautiful symbol I created fifteen years ago – the ‘Quinto Sol’ Labyrinth design. It was inspired by the Aztec calendar ‘Sun Stone’ and its mythology. I chose to revive this design as a metaphor for the new path my life has taken. I felt it would be a good vehicle to visually interpret the various thoughts and feeling associated with being my husband’s caregiver” Herrera says, “As a caregiver I have become totally present to another person.” She uses her art as an interpretive means for this experience, but also as therapeutic outlet for the complex emotional journey of this chapter in life.

She has been an Artist Member of Baton Rouge Gallery since 1992. She earned her Bachelor of Art and her Master of Fine Art from the University of California.

This exhibition is presented alongside the latest works from Mary Ann Caffery, Linda Jeffers, & Brian Kelly. All works from these four artists are on view, free of charge, during normal gallery hours (12 - 6 p.m., Tue - Sun) through August 1, 2019.
