STEVE SCHMIDT

Steve Schmidt's paintings evoke the indefinable instead of defining the obvious. Schmidt’s work, by offering the viewer intuitive meaning from shared experiences, establishes a communion which is felt rather than reasoned. His abstract work calls on the ineffability of nature as a driving force behind them.

Steve Schmidt was born in Baton Rouge. He was employed with the East Baton Rouge Parish Talented Art Program as an Art Instructor, from 1995 to 1999. In 1999 he began as an Adjunct Instructor at Baton Rouge Community College, where he continued as an Associate Professor, teaching Painting, Drawing, Figure Drawing, as well as Art History.

He has twice attended The Atlantic Center for the Arts, working with artists David Salle and Gregory Amenoff, who have influenced him greatly. Schmidt has also attended the Millay Colony in Austerlitz, NY, the Contemporary Arts Center in Pittsfield, Mass. and the Vermont Studio Center in Johnson, VT.
