Craig McCullen works in glass. That is to say, Craig’s actual medium is light. He’s been drawn to art glass as a vessel for light, and he’s delighted by the myriad of ways that the glass can filter the light and shape the viewer’s experience of it. He makes sculptural works that are meant to be seen in many different light situations. Each gives a fresh new read to the artwork, giving it a new voice. He is delighted by the constant surprises that he encounters when composing his glass sculptures, and he hopes the audience will find joy in their experience of them as well. Often he will build a narrative into a work, with hints to the message embedded in the title. It is a curious challenge to create stained glass works, knowing that they will be hung in a gallery setting, with a significant dearth of natural light for the works to dance with. McCullen remarks that this is an example of how a work has one voice in the studio or home setting, and quite another when moved about into another place. No one lighting situation is better or worse for his glass, just different. Each brings a distinct flavor to the experience and reveals or obfuscates parts of the composition depending on how they are interacting with light.
