Thomas Neff is a well-known and respected photographer whose travels over a four-decade long career have resulted in thoughtful and moving images. While the locations changed, his methodology and technique remained consistent with an interest in the landscape, architecture, and people of the destinations he’s explored. He has photographed and exhibited work in Italy, Ireland, Japan, and China, though he may be best known locally for his work in New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina in 2005. His acclaimed book, Holding Out and Hanging On: Surviving Hurricane Katrina was released by The University of Missouri Press in 2007 compiled meditative and sympathetic black-and-white portraits and interviews with survivors of the storm.
“For the past 53 years my practice of photography has largely been focused on landscapes. Initially, my interest was in landscapes that were found in the “Natural” world, but later evolved to include rural/city landscapes, architecture, and often animals and people. As I looked at my past work from my travels both here and abroad, I began to see similar features and forms present in many of my images despite coming from quite different worlds. This juxtaposition is my focus for this body of work. It is my hope that as human society continues to struggle with meeting our needs that we do not negate the natural world and can come to a balanced existence - our survival depends on it. ” - Neff
A resident of Louisiana since 1982, Neff is Professor Emeritus of Photography at Louisiana State University, where he taught for 33 years. His work has been shown throughout the United States and abroad and is included in the permanent collections of The Ogden Museum of Southern Art, the Arrowmont School (Gatlinburg, TN), and The Spencer Art Museum (Lawrence, KS), among others.
This exhibition is presented alongside the latest works from Anita Cooke, Audra Kohout, & Hye Yeon Nam. All works from these artists are on view, free of charge, during normal gallery hours (12 - 6 p.m., Tue - Sun) from August 3-26, 2021.
