With his newest BRG exhibition, artist Matt Morris invites you into Otherworlds. There, Morris repurposes objects, breathing new life into items that might otherwise have been discarded. By elevating these trivial bits of flotsam in the consciousness of others, he presents newly created stories that explore our relationship with the environment and offer commentary on contemporary culture.

The photographs presented are not composites. They are carefully staged and lit before being photographed exactly as the viewer sees them. “Essentially, I am applying my assemblage or mixed media sensibility to photography, trying to make permanent these ephemeral collections of things and light,” explains Morris. “This process allows me to develop ideas and get them realized efficiently. I think of it as making paintings with a camera.”

Morris is a mixed media artist who explores relationships between nature and technology. Morris spent a decade living in Bavaria and continues to be influenced by the art and architecture of central Europe. Morris has had solo exhibitions in Los Angeles, Paris, and Hamburg. While living in southern California, he was awarded the Los Angeles Artcore prize by Roland Reiss. Since returning to Louisiana in 2008, Morris has, at different times, worked as an adjunct professor at both Louisiana State University and Baton Rouge Community College.

This exhibition is presented alongside the latest works from Rob Carpenter and Eleanor Owen Kerr. All works from these four artists are on view, free of charge, during normal gallery hours (12 - 6 p.m., Tue - Sun) through February 28, 2019.
